This is the story of another luxury powerhouse; this time it is a Spanish one and its main symbol is a teddy bear.
I must confess that I always considered teddy bears in luxury a little bit like a peterpan complex on adult women, however, it comes to mind the likes of Moschino or Pandora, which also have a teddy bear in their ADN. But here we are, and I recently got my hands on the new Tous - LoveMe Onyx Parfum and I simply adore it: and there is also that coveted coat Teddy from Max Mara (that is also on my wishlist!).

Tous is a Spanish jewelry company founded in 1920 by Salvador Tous Blavi and his wife Teresa Ponsa Mas. It started as a watch repair workshop and gradually transitioned to jewelry. But it was his son's wife Rosa Oriol who developed in 1985 the iconic and company signature bear, which was inspired by a teddy bear she saw on her travels and sought to recapture in gold. The Tous bear became a success and is now always present in their collections in some form. Tous remains a 3rd generation family-run business, in the hands of the daughters of Salvador and Rosa - Rosa, Alba, Laura and Marta, and has expanded to baby gear, handbags and small accessories.

But, Salvatore Ferragamo is no longer only a footwear brand, having expanded his operations to many other sectors, such as fragrances.

However, it is important to share a quick history lesson on the Italian luxury power house. Salvatore Ferragamo was a poor farmer boy from Bonito, a small village 100km South of Naples. But it was his work for Hollywood, where he had moved to, that ensured the recognition and worldwide fame, dressing stars like Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, Greta Garbo and Marilyn Monroe.In 1927, the business went (back) to Italy, to Florence and Salvatore showed that he was an inventor and a visionnaire, besides a simple shoemaker; when he died in 1960, he had filed 350 patents and created 20'000 designs, leaving the business to his widow and children, who kept developing it to what we now know.

Maybe due to the large family and being a family-run business until today, Salvatore Ferragamo Perfumes have been developed in-house until now. However, an agreement with Inter Parfums was made in late 2021, to produce and further develop the beauty business for the Salvatore Ferragamo house. As you might have guessed, these notes are all about Moschino.
Named after its founder Franco Moschino (1950-1994), this Italian fashion house was founded in 1983 in Milan. Magnet for bold girls that want to make a statement, this Italian powerhouse is recognised by not only its colourful, playful and eccentric designs, but also for its social commentary behind its designs. All of this is a reflection of the irreverence and tongue-in-cheek humor of its creator; and now the names of Miley Cyrus and Katy Perry, make even more sense as modern faces of the brand.
But, these first few lines of this brand DNA do remind me of another Italian powerhouse - Versace - so there has to be some kind of connection and after a little research, there it was…Franco Moschino started his career as an illustrator for Gianni Versace (Ha! I knew it!).But my favorite part about researching about Moschino, is discovering how Franco in 1992 created an ad campaign speaking out against drug abuse, violence and animal cruelty or how in 1994, Moschino creates an environment-friendly collection (Ecouture) under the label Nature Friendly Garment. Or how, in 1988, when first launched the line Cheap & Chic, the cheeky collection that features fake kurs is called Furs for Fun. Isn't everything so 2021?
Some final remarks are that the Moschino perfumes for men and women are produced under both its Moschino and Cheap & Chic brands by Euroitalia SRL and in collaboration with perfumers Olivier Polge, Antoine Maisondieu, Guillaume Flavigny, Olivier Cresp, Vincente Marcello, Ilias Ermenidis, Alberto Morillas, Olivier Pescheux, Nathalie Lorson, Alexandra Kosinski, Fabrice Pellegrin and Yann Vasnier.

Let’s talk about perfumes (is it perfumes or fragrances?).
Just as we were investigating the beauty industry we were surprised to discover that there is a world of unshared knowledge about perfumes classification. And why is that? No idea. But, we decided to share it with you. (Note to self, research fragrance vs perfume).
Perfume creation involves the selection and combination of the right mix of raw ingredients, perfumeirs use their knowledge to create unique olfactory combinations (We all know this, right?!).
However, what we did not know (myself included) is that throughout history, perfumes have been classified using the fragrance wheel, aka aroma wheel, fragrance circle, perfume wheel or smell wheel.

The first example of a fragrance wheel was conceived by Austrian perfumer Paul Jellinek, being named the Odor Effects Diagram, and published in the original German edition of his book The Practice of Modern Perfumery (1949).
In 1979, the Fragrance Circle, was developed by U. Harder at Haarman & Reimer.
In 1984, the sensory chemist Ann C. Noble, developed the Wine Aroma Wheel.
And in 1992, and the Fragrance Wheel, was created by perfumery taxonomist Michael Edwards.

The wheel is a circular diagram showing the inferred relationships among olfactory groups based upon similarities and differences in their odor. However, it is still a very broad classification as the different proportions in between the raw materials create different perfume identities. Enter another type of classification, more specific and based precisely in each perfume identity - the olfactory, fragrance or perfume pyramid.

Perfumer Jean Carles, who was a perfumer at Roure, later became Givaudan, established and taught the olfactory pyramid.

The Olfactory Pyramid is based on the study and classification of the fragrance’s raw materials according to their volatility - top notes have a very high volatility, heart notes a medium volatility and base notes a low volatility. Each perfume will have its own olfactory, fragrance or perfume pyramid depending on the fragrance’s life-cycle, which is simply the speed of evaporation (volatility) classification for each perfume component. (Mind blowing right?)
